Five Years of Celebrating Women in Agriculture

We are happy to announce the Fifth Annual Iowa Women’s Landowner Conference on June 22nd, 2017 in Brooklyn, Iowa. This conference is brought to you by the Iowa County Women Land and Legacy (WLL) and Iowa Land Sales & Farm Management.

The conference is open to everyone, but is specifically tailored to women. Fun Fact: women own or co-own over half of Iowa’s farmland. Because of this, women have the potential to transform Iowa’s landscape and farm communities in significant and positive ways. Every effort is made to target the educational needs of women in Iowa, focusing on their empowerment and encouraging local contacts and relationships. We also strive to provide information to those who want to learn more about how to care for and pass on the land. Estate Planning is an ever-evolving topic, most effectively applied when families plan together.

The conference has addressed a variety of relevant topics the past four years. The 2017 agenda will feature Marji Guyler-Alaniz, president and founder of FarmHer. Marji is a lifetime Iowan and lover of photography. Through FarmHer she is updating the image of agriculture by showing the female side of farming, creating community amongst women in agriculture and outreach to young women interested in agriculture. Iowa Finance Authority will present on beginning tax programs and the benefit they provide Iowa landowners. The afternoon session will highlight Estate Planning & Trusts, the Great Debate. Erin Herbold-Swalwell and Cristy Tackett-Hunt are two local Iowa attorneys who will advocate both for and against trusts in estate planning. Mike Pearson, host of IPTVs Market to Market, will be the Master of Ceremonies injecting humor and engaging the audience with his local charm for the 5th consecutive year.

Iowa County Women Land and Legacy member Jennifer Ness, shared “The success of our conference each year validates the need for this kind of outreach.” Estate planning is complex and confusing, this year’s sessions on Trusts should shed light on both sides of the Trust issue. FarmHer is all about women and empowerment, highlighting their role in Ag and communities. The goal is to educate and motivate attendees to take action on their own situations. This local conference has been able to continuously recruit powerhouse presenters and offer a professional conference experience for minimal cost to participants. Past conference attendees rave about the food, the presenters and the personal networking opportunities experienced each year, which is why over half are repeat participants! If you haven’t attended previously, 2017 is the year to start.

The conference will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at the Michael J. Manatt Community Center in Brooklyn, Iowa. Registration begins at 7:30 am. Various speakers are scheduled throughout the day, concluding around 3:30 pm. The conference fee is $30. Breakfast, snacks, lunch, handouts and door prizes are all provided.
